Mojang just dropped a fresh Snapshot for Minecraft: Java Edition, and it’s the real deal for adventurers who love to shake things up. Snapshot 24w13a is packed to the brim with game-changing tweaks that finally let players enchant the Mace, while also revamping the ominous vibe of Trial Chambers. If you thought the Mace was already busted, wait until you see what the devs have cooked up – it’s a total game-changer that’s got the community buzzing louder than a hive of angry bees.
The Mace has been the talk of the town ever since it first smashed its way into Snapshot 24w11a. This heavyweight melee weapon, crafted from a breeze rod and a heavy core, rewards daredevil players who pounce from great heights with devastating damage and a knockback so fierce it sends mobs flying. The old version already let players negate fall damage, making it the ultimate "leap of faith" tool. But now, in 24w13a, the devs have cranked everything up to eleven. The smash attack gets a fresh explosive particle effect that screams power, and the knockback range and strength have been amped up. Fall more than five blocks, and you’ll trigger an even meatier knockback – perfect for yeeting creepers into next week. Plus, upon landing a successful strike, all your vertical momentum resets, and any accumulated fall distance is wiped clean. In a slight balancing move, the baseline extra damage per fallen block has been nudged down to 3 (1.5 hearts), keeping things spicy but not totally broken.
But the real headline grabber is the introduction of enchantments for the Mace. Players can now slap on classics like Mending, Unbreaking, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Fire Aspect, and Curse of Vanishing. That alone opens up a world of possibilities, but Mojang didn’t stop there. Three brand-new enchantments unique to the Mace are here to turn every fight into a spectacle. Let’s break them down:
-
Density (Common, 5 levels): Every level adds more extra damage per block fallen. The higher you drop, the harder you hit—simple and deadly.
-
Breach (Rare, 4 levels): Reduces the effectiveness of a target’s armor. Perfect for shredding those iron-clad zombies and players in PvP.
-
Wind Burst (Unique, 3 levels, found only in Ominous Vaults): Hitting an enemy launches you upward, letting you chain smash attacks like a pogo stick from hell. Each level bounces you higher – combine it with Density and you’ll be a human wrecking ball.
These enchantments have modders already salivating, as they set the stage for even more wild Mace customizations down the road.
But Snapshot 24w13a isn’t just a Mace party. The Breeze mob got a dose of common sense – it now avoids leaping into dangerous blocks or thin air, so no more watching the windy boi commit accidental suicide. Wind Charges also stopped picking fights with End Crystals, finally putting an end to those frustrating accidental explosions.
Now hold onto your helmets, because the Bad Omen system has gone through a full-on redesign. The old Bad Omen is dead; long live Ominous Events. Instead of triggering a raid instantly when you strut into a village, the effect now transforms into a Raid Omen variant with a 30-second timer. Once the timer ticks down, a proper raid kicks off at your location – giving you a chance to chug milk and bail out if you’re not ready to throw down. A shadowy new icon and a spooky sound cue make sure you know you’ve been marked. And that’s not all: Trial Chambers now get their own Ominous Event, and it’s absolutely ruthless.
Enter the Ominous Bottle, a consumable item that slaps you with Bad Omen for a whopping 1 hour and 40 minutes. You can find these bottles in Vaults or as drops from Raid Captains outside raids, and they come in five levels of chaos. Drink one right before stepping into a Trial Chamber, and you’ll set off the Trial Omen – a 15-minute effect (per Bad Omen level multiplied) that surrounds you with wicked particles. When a standard Trial Spawner detects a player with Trial Omen, it morphs into an Ominous Trial Spawner, glowing blue with soul flames and spitting out mobs armed to the teeth. These mobs often wear gear with Trial Chamber armor trims, and spawners will even rain lingering potions and projectiles on unsuspecting players. Defeating one grants an Ominous Trial Key, used to unlock the newly added Ominous Vaults – tougher-to-find chests that dish out top-tier rewards like Enchanted Golden Apples, exclusive Mace enchantments (Wind Burst, Breach, Density), and the Flow armor trim and banner pattern.
Speaking of armor trims, two new ones have been added alongside fresh banner patterns and three pottery sherds, expanding the customization options for dedicated builders and fashionistas alike. The Flow Armor Trim and Guster Banner Pattern can now only be obtained from standard Vaults and the new Ominous Vaults respectively, shaking up the loot tables and giving completionists a real treasure hunt.
That’s not all, folks. Snapshot 24w13a introduces six new mob effects that can be brewed into potions and encountered in Ominous Trials:
-
Wind Charged: boom! Entity bursts with a wind gust upon death. Brewed with a Breeze Rod.
-
Weaving: death spreads cobwebs. Non-player entities with this effect can walk through cobwebs like they’re nothing. Made with a Cobweb block.
-
Oozing: spawning two slimes on death. Brewed with a Slime Block.
-
Infested: 5% chance to spawn silverfish when hurt. Brewed from a Stone block.
These effects add a whole new layer of strategy—and mayhem—to combat situations. Just don’t expect Slimes to be affected by Oozing or Silverfish by Infested; they’re immune.
On the technical side, Trial Spawners now only activate when a player is in line of sight, and mob counts scale more gently with additional players. Loot tables have been rebalanced, with Heavy Cores moving to Ominous Vaults and a very rare chance of a Trident dropping from standard Vaults. The Trial Chamber layout got a makeover too, with a new “eruption” chamber, an atrium in the corridors, and the guarantee that corridors won’t generate endlessly anymore – a solid quality-of-life improvement.
With all these additions, Snapshot 24w13a is shaping up to be one of the most exciting updates for Minecraft in recent memory. The Mace is no longer just a fun gimmick; it’s a fully-fledged weapon with enchantment potential that rewards creativity and skill. The revamped Ominous Events breathe fresh life into Trial Chambers, offering hardcore challenges and loot that’s actually worth the risk. So fire up your launcher, grab an Ominous Bottle, and get ready to experience Minecraft like never before. Just try not to bounce into a lava lake while chaining those Wind Burst smashes – you’ve been warned.
